Pollonia, Milos

Pollonia sits on the north-eastern tip of Milos, about twenty-five minutes from Adamas. It is a former fishing village that has grown into the island’s quieter alternative to the capital: a curve of sandy beach, a line of tavernas along the water, tamarisk trees for shade, and the ferry to Kimolos coming and going from the small quay.

Why people stay here

Pollonia suits travellers who want to walk to dinner rather than drive to it. Most of the accommodation sits within a few minutes of the seafront, the beach is sheltered and shallow enough for children, and the evening is calm in a way Adamas is not. It is also the best base if you plan to spend a day on Kimolos.

The Kimolos ferry

The small ferry to Kimolos runs from Pollonia, not from Adamas. The crossing takes around twenty to thirty minutes and runs several times a day in season. If you are staying elsewhere on Milos and want to visit Kimolos, you need to get to Pollonia first, and the timetable is tight enough that it is worth arranging the transfer around it rather than the other way round. Beaches nearby

• Pollonia beach itself, sandy and shallow, right in the village.
• Papafragas, a few minutes away, where the sea cuts narrow channels into soft white rock. Spectacular, though access to the water involves a steep and slippery scramble.
• Sarakiniko, about fifteen minutes west, the white lunar landscape.
• Mandrakia, a small fishing cove with coloured boat houses, also around fifteen minutes.

Practical notes

• It is a long way from the airport. Forty euros and about twenty-five minutes. Worth pre-booking rather than hoping for a taxi.
• Book tavernas in August. The seafront is small and popular.
• Parking is limited in the village centre in high season.
• The wind matters. Pollonia is exposed to the northerly, so on very windy days the south coast beaches are more comfortable.
