How to Get Around Milos: Transfers, Taxis, Car Hire or Bus

Milos is 151 square kilometres with roughly a dozen licensed taxis serving the entire island. That single fact shapes every transport decision you will make here, and it catches out a lot of first-time visitors who assume they can sort things out on arrival.

How many taxis are there on Milos?

There are approximately a dozen licensed taxis serving the whole of Milos. They are not hailed on the street the way they are in Athens; you either find one at the rank in Adamas, at the airport when a flight lands, or you telephone. In July and August they are booked solid, and the rank empties within minutes of a ferry or flight arriving.

This is the single most useful thing to understand about transport on Milos. It is not that the island is badly served, it is that the supply is small and fixed while the summer demand is enormous.

Is a private transfer worth it in Milos?

Yes, for airport and port arrivals, and for evenings out in Plaka. A private transfer is the only option that is guaranteed to be waiting for you at a specific time, at a price agreed in advance, with space for your luggage.

The case is strongest in three situations:

• Arrivals. You have luggage, you have just travelled, and you cannot control whether a taxi is free. Airport transfers run €25 to Adamas and €40 to Pollonia.
• Ferry connections. Ferries are frequently late and occasionally cancelled. A tracked port transfer absorbs that; a taxi booking does not.
• Dinner in Plaka. Narrow lanes, a car park that fills by early evening, and a dark drive back down. A transfer means whoever would have driven can have a glass of wine instead.

Should I rent a car in Milos?

Rent a car if you are staying five days or more and intend to beach-hop daily. Skip it for short stays, and read the hire agreement carefully before you drive to the south coast.

The freedom is real. So are three catches that visitors discover too late:

1. Unsurfaced roads are usually excluded from the insurance. Firiplaka, Tsigrado, Paleochori and Agia Kyriaki all involve unsurfaced approaches. Damage sustained there frequently is not covered, and the small print says so.
2. Parking is genuinely difficult in Adamas and Plaka from mid-morning through the evening in July and August.
3. Cars sell out. Book weeks ahead for August or there will be nothing left on the island.

A common and sensible compromise: hire a car for the middle days of your trip, and use transfers for the airport or port runs at either end, when you have luggage and a schedule.

Are quad bikes and ATVs a good idea in Milos?

ATVs are fun for short village hops and useless for anything involving luggage or a long gravel descent. They are also the most common source of holiday injuries on Cycladic islands.

The descents to several Milos beaches are loose gravel on a gradient. That is exactly the surface on which a quad’s short wheelbase and high centre of gravity work against you. If you take one, take it for the paved north of the island and leave the south-coast tracks alone.

Does Milos have a bus service?

Yes. KTEL buses run from Adamas to Plaka, Trypiti, Pollonia, Provatas, Paleochori and Achivadolimni, with the most frequent services in July and August. Fares are a few euros.

The bus is a genuinely good option if you are relaxed about timing, staying in Adamas, and heading somewhere on the route. It is not useful for a 6am flight, for reaching Firiplaka or Tsigrado, or for carrying luggage between accommodation. Timetables are posted at the Adamas stop and change between seasons, so check them locally rather than trusting an old website.

So which should you choose?

• Two or three nights — transfers only. A hire car will spend most of its life parked.
• Five nights or more, beach-focused — hire a car for the middle days, transfers for the airport runs.
• Travelling with children or a lot of luggage — transfers, and ask for child seats when booking.
